Day 1: Your Favorite Song
kd lang’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.
To be honest, I absolutely adore the lyrics to Hallelujah, which makes it my favorite song, of all time — and I have about twenty different versions on my iPod.
Still, there’s something about kd lang’s version that never fails to get me, every single time I listen to it.
It’s my go-to rainy-day song, the song that I automatically click on when I’m upset, or frustrated, or just having a crappy day.
It’s the song I listen to when I have nothing else to do, and I can just close my eyes and listen to the lyrics.
It’s the song I want to listen to on the morning after my wedding, and share with my partner how much it’s meant to me, and what it’s gotten me through, ever since I first heard it.
There was a time when you let me know
what’s really going on below,
But now, you never show that to me,
Do you?
Remember when I moved in you;
The holy dove was moving, too,
And every breath we drew was
Hallelujah.
k.d.’s version of this rips me apart very time i hear it. i love this song so much, and there is something about her version - the timbre of her voice perhaps? the way she sings that high note when she sings the word ‘hallelujah’? the amazing control she has over her voice? i don’t know quite know what it is, it just gets to me.
